Collegewise provided me with a better understanding of the college application and decision process than I thought possible. Collegewise’s guidance throughout the process allowed me to really figure out what I was looking for in a college, while also maximizing my options.

I would often be stressed about what I needed to get done or about how things were turning out, but every time I walked out of the office, I was so at ease. I think the most important part about being at Collegewise was how personalized the process was, and how much care and time and effort went into me specifically.

Going to my meetings at Collegewise never felt like a chore, but more as something to look forward to! Everyone in the office is so friendly, willing to help, and made for such great motivators and supporters when it came time to fill in apps and write essays. 10/10!

The college application process is confusing and tedious, and Collegewise really helped with that process. It was reassuring to go over my application with my counselor so that we could make sure that I had a better chance of getting in!

Carlos Gooden, College Counselor
In his higher education career that began with leading college tours more than 20 years ago, Dr. Gooden has logged successful admissions stints, both undergraduate and graduate, for nine different schools including University of Chicago, University of Southern California, UC San Diego, University of New Orleans, and Xavier University. After completing his master’s in higher education, Carlos earned a doctorate in educational administration, a topic on which he is currently publishing a peer-reviewed book.
Like the very best in any profession, the greats of college counseling bring passion to the job that’s bigger than the work. For Carlos, this passion comes through in his academic history, his joy in guiding students through the self-discovery inherent to a successful college planning process, and even to his leisure time, as Carlos doesn’t visit museums or national parks when he travels; he visits nearby colleges.
As Carlos puts it:
I have personally, professionally, and academically researched higher education institutions to be a partner for families in this process. My goal is to be an integral partner who works with and for parents—they are critical in this decision-making process.
An emerging serious runner who’s logged monthly 5ks and 10ks with eyes (and legs) on a future half marathon, Carlos never runs faster than to wherever Beyonce is performing, having seen her in concert 13 times. When he’s not earning miles pounding the pavement or traveling to visit colleges, Carlos enjoys eating vegetarian cuisine and catching at least one Broadway show annually.
