That's why admissions officers have read thousands of essays about "How serving homeless people taught me to be thankful for what I have." "How football proves I can commit to my goals." And "How my trip to a foreign country broadened my horizons."

Teenagers don't actually talk like that. They never say those sentences to other people. But they find those sentiments when writing college essays.

When a student begins with "I have been a member of National Charity League for the last three years and it has taught me many important lessons about service and helping others," the admissions officer can almost recite the rest of the essay without reading it.
