Shruti Nelson pattern

Shruti Nelson, College Counselor

Shruti started her higher education career in admissions at her alma mater, Gettysburg College, where she traveled the entire state of NJ, Long Island, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Ohio, and managed the Tour Guide and the Day and Overnight Visit programs, in addition to reviewing applications. She then moved to the Midwest to pursue her Master’s in Higher Education at the University of Michigan, and took a job at Purdue University, working in the Academic Success Center, helping students with study skills, time management, and motivation. Most recently, Shruti served as Assistant Director for Transition & Mentoring Programs at Texas Tech University, where she oversaw first-generation programs and the Dream Resource Center. Working at these various institutions has given Shruti an understanding of the different types of colleges and universities across the country and she looks forward to sharing this perspective with the students and families she works with.

Shruti has worked with a variety of students in her 9 years in higher education, from campus tour guides, day visit ambassadors, students on advisory boards, peer coaches, and peer mentors. Through it all, her favorite part has always been getting to know students personally, hearing their backgrounds and stories, and using this information to help them achieve their goals. This is no different in her role as a college counselor—and she looks forward to the opportunity to understand her students/families’ hopes regarding the college search and using these to help her students find their home.

Despite currently living in Texas, and having spent the last 8 years in the Midwest, Shruti grew up in Northern New Jersey and can often be found explaining the superiority of a Jersey bagel. In her free time, Shruti can be found trying new recipes in the kitchen- with some recent forays into baking- taking long walks in local parks (often with her husband and daughter), and cleaning and organizing (which sounds like a chore, but is really relaxing to her).
