Collegewise provided me with a better understanding of the college application and decision process than I thought possible. Collegewise’s guidance throughout the process allowed me to really figure out what I was looking for in a college, while also maximizing my options.

I would often be stressed about what I needed to get done or about how things were turning out, but every time I walked out of the office, I was so at ease. I think the most important part about being at Collegewise was how personalized the process was, and how much care and time and effort went into me specifically.

Going to my meetings at Collegewise never felt like a chore, but more as something to look forward to! Everyone in the office is so friendly, willing to help, and made for such great motivators and supporters when it came time to fill in apps and write essays. 10/10!

The college application process is confusing and tedious, and Collegewise really helped with that process. It was reassuring to go over my application with my counselor so that we could make sure that I had a better chance of getting in!

Terran Young, College Counselor
Terran’s college advising career began immediately after graduating from Howard University and continues more than 15 years later. Her students have been accepted to nearly all of the most selective colleges and universities in the country, including Harvard, Brown, Princeton, Columbia, Penn, Stanford, University of Michigan, Duke, University of Chicago, Northwestern, Tufts, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Wellesley, Claremont McKenna, Reed, UT Austin, and Georgia Tech. Terran also has deep admissions expertise with schools in the UK and many other European countries, having logged stints as a director of college counseling at top-performing international American and British schools.
With a master’s degree in counseling psychology and extensive experience counseling at multiple private international schools as well as domestic public schools, Terran is comfortable working with a wide range of students presenting varying levels of academic achievement, support needs, and educational goals. This diverse expertise guiding students through the complexities of modern college admissions allows her to build trust easily, to help families make sense of a confusing process, and to identify the most effective ways for her students to stand out.
A common admissions misconception is the idea of a perfect applicant who has checked all the college preparation boxes. While colleges certainly look to factors like courses and grades as measures of applicant potential, they are mindful of seeking students who bring different life experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds to make for an interesting freshman class who can learn from each other. In Terran, students benefit from a counselor who’s fascinated with their individual stories, who can see their potential, and who delights in helping them inspire the same interest from their chosen colleges.
As Terran describes it:
I view the college application process as an opportunity for students to showcase not just their achievements, but also their individuality and aspirations. Together, we turn applications into vivid portrayals of students' journeys, helping them stand out in a competitive admissions landscape.
A former Division I soccer player and team MVP who can still curl a free kick around a seemingly impenetrable wall of defenders, Terran also enjoys playing spirited games of pickleball, enjoying perfectly brewed matcha lattes, and embracing spontaneous travel opportunities.
