UC Irvine’s general acceptance rate (29%) has held steady between 2024 and 2025, even increasing from 2023. UC Irvine is generally considered one of the more selective campuses in the University of California (UC) system and a moderately selective public research institution.

UC Irvine has yet to release its most recent Class of 2030 admissions data, but historical data points to another year of record-high applications and enrollments.

What is UC Irvine’s in-state acceptance rate?

California residents go up against UC Irvine’s 22% in-state acceptance rate. Not surprisingly, California residents make up the bulk (69.4%) of the total number of yearly applications UC Irvine receives. For this reason, the competition is much higher, resulting in a lower acceptance rate.

As with other UC campuses, UC Irvine has been mandated to prioritize California residents over out-of-state or international applicants. Still, the campus only has a limited number of seats available despite growing popularity amongst in-state students.

Is it easier to get into UC Irvine as an out-of-state student?

Out-of-state and international applicants have a far more favorable acceptance rate of 44.5%. But does that mean it's easier to get in as an out-of-state applicant?

Joel Ontiveros, former Assistant Director of Admission at UCLA and Collegewise Counselor, chalks it up to self-selection, institutional priorities, and yield rates.

"The reason out-of-state admit rates are higher at some UC campuses is that those campuses really struggle to yield out-of-state students. Essentially, convincing them to enroll and pay up to $60,000 a year is no easy task compared to a more desirable UC campus. But, for the more competitive or most applied-to UCs, out-of-state admit rates are on par with California admit rates, or lower."

Another contributing factor is institutional priorities and how campuses meet their budgets for the year. "The UCs are institutions, but they're also companies needing to be cashflow positive. One way to ensure they're hitting budget is by enrolling more out-of-state students who are more likely to pay full tuition as opposed to in-state students," says Joel. 

At face value, it seems like the pathway to UC Irvine is much easier for out-of-state applicants, but the reality is much more nuanced. Out-of-state students tend to be more intentional about where they are applying, which ultimately leads to a more competitive applicant pool.

What is UC Irvine’s transfer acceptance rate?

2025 reported a favorable acceptance rate—38.5% in-state and 41.8% out-of-state—for transfer students. It’s no surprise that more students are opting for the transfer option, given the considerable difference between the general acceptance and transfer acceptance rates.

Following the same trend as undergraduate admit rates, UC Irvine’s transfer rate is still more competitive for California community college students than those applying from out-of-state institutions.

How to get into UC Irvine

UC Irvine’s minimum grade point average (GPA) requirement is 3.00 for California residents and 3.4 for non-California residents. The caveat here is that meeting the requirement does not guarantee admission.

In fact, UC Irvine reported that the majority of their Class of 2029 first-year admit GPAs fell within the 4.04 to 4.27 range. Students should consider this their target GPA. For more competitive majors, a higher GPA will be expected.

Applicants are also expected to submit a response to four of the eight personal insight questions (PIQs) as part of their college application, meet all A-G requirements, and include supplemental information regarding their achievements, awards, and extracurricular activities.

A plus for students is that the entire UC system waived standardized testing requirements. Post-COVID-19 applicants were no longer expected to submit their SAT or ACT scores. Not only did this level the playing field for students who did not have access to standardized tests, but it also gave students more time to focus their attention on their academics.

Beyond the college rankings, UC Irvine is an excellent choice for students considering a STEM degree, interested in research opportunities, or looking to be part of diverse campus life. However, the pathway to UC Irvine is not an easy one.
