They're Admitting Humans, Not Resumes
Quick answer:
Getting into NYU requires a strong academic profile, typically a GPA around 3.7 or higher, and test scores in the 75th percentile, along with meaningful extracurriculars, authentic essays, and a strong sense of interest in NYU. NYU’s 9.0% acceptance rate means academics alone are not enough to be admitted; the quality of the entire college application is what sets students apart.
What does it take to get into NYU?
NYU is one of the most competitive universities in the world, receiving over 100,000 applications yearly. NYU’s acceptance rate sits at 9.0%, making it as selective as some Ivy League institutions. Being a strong candidate is not enough to be admitted to NYU; it will also require students to be strategic about their application
NYU uses a holistic admissions process, meaning it weighs academic achievements alongside essays, extracurriculars, demonstrated interest, and recommendation letters. What separates admitted students is how well-rounded their college applications are. They aren’t competitive just in one area; they’ve taken the time to build out every application component.
What are NYU’s admissions requirements?
NYU’s holistic admissions process includes evaluating qualitative and quantitative aspects of a student’s college application. NYU isn’t looking to only admit students who can do the coursework; they are looking for students who can “move beyond comfort zones,” demonstrating intellectual curiosity and a willingness to push boundaries in their studies and experiences.
According to the 2025-2026 Common Data Set, NYU’s holistic review considers 13 components. While the exact weight of each isn’t published, the academic portion of the application carries the most significant weight, followed by test scores, essays, and personal qualities.

What GPA do you need to get into NYU?
NYU does not advertise the minimum grade point average (GPA) requirement, but the profile of admitted students sets a clear standard.
According to the 2025-26 Common Data Set, 54.7% of admitted students in the Class of 2029 had a GPA between 3.75 and 3.99. Only 17.2% of students had a perfect 4.0 GPA, and the average high school GPA for first-year applicants is 3.81.
But GPA alone isn’t the whole story; NYU explicitly emphasizes course rigor. Gretchen Gleason, Collegewise counselor and former NYU application reader, saw this firsthand. “Competition is often found in course selection. What classes did you take in high school? How did you challenge yourself? It really shows up in course selection,” she says. She adds that senior year is a particularly common place where students go wrong: “A lot of kids want to take that step down and have an easier course load, but taking your foot off the gas pedal can raise a few eyebrows for admissions officers.”
For students applying to the Stern School of Business or Tandon School of Engineering specifically, the bar is even higher. “NYU literally has a checkbox for both engineering and business to have calculus,” Gleason warns. “If you took pre-cal and got an A, you have to take calculus. If you took pre-cal and then take another AP instead, it doesn’t show an upward trend.”
For students whose high school doesn’t offer advanced courses, don’t fret. The expectation is that students challenge themselves within the resources available to them.
Does NYU require SAT or ACT scores?
NYU is currently test-optional, and will remain test-optional until the 2026-2027 application cycle. Students have the choice of submitting their test scores, but do know that NYU does recommend that students submit their SAT or ACT scores.
For applicants intending to submit test scores, nearly 100% of enrolled NYU students submitted ACT scores between 30 and 36. SAT score performance is not publicly available.
Based on historical data provided by the Common Data Set, it’s safe to assume that students should aim to fall within 1370 and 1540 on the SAT and 30 and 36 on the ACT.
If your scores fall within that range, submit them. If they fall below, it may be best to keep them out of your college application and focus that energy on perfecting your essays and extracurriculars.
What does NYU look for beyond grades?
NYU highly values character and personal qualities. Ways in which students can speak to who they are include:
- Personal essay and supplemental responses
- Letters of recommendation
- Extracurricular achievements
- Awards
In these sections of the application, NYU application readers can get a better sense of the person behind the application.
How important is NYU’s supplemental essay question?
NYU’s supplemental essay is optional, but Gleason warns students not to let that fool you. “It’s technically optional, which means, yeah, no, of course you need to do it. I encourage students to use all the space they are given.” As a reader, she noted it wasn’t always the deciding factor for strong candidates, but for borderline applicants, it could tip the scales. “If you’re on the cusp, it could sway one way or the other.”
For the most recent application cycle, NYU asked students to respond to at least one of three prompts in 250 words or less:
- Tell us about a time you encountered a perspective different from your own. What did you learn—about yourself, the other person, or the world?
- Tell us about an experience you’ve had working with others who have different backgrounds or perspectives. What challenges did your group face? Did you overcome them, and if so, how? What role did you try to play in helping people to work together, and what did you learn from your efforts?
- Tell us about someone you’ve observed who does a particularly good job helping people think or work together. How does this person set the stage for common exploration or work? How do they react when difficulties or dissensions arise?
She also flagged a pattern worth noting: “The supplemental essay also demonstrates interest. Even if a kid was above profile, if they didn’t do the supplemental, I’d question if they actually wanted to go to NYU.”
When answering these prompts, specificity is key. “If you just mention New York City, that’s actually not impressive at all. There are plenty of schools in New York City, and that answer doesn’t address the ‘why NYU’ piece. You’ll likely get dinged for that.”
Successful supplemental essay responses are those that go deeper and speak to the bridge building NYU emphasizes in their resources, specific programs, global opportunities, and aspects of NYU that cannot be found elsewhere.
When should you apply to NYU?
NYU offers three application options for students each year:
- Early Decision (I) due November 1
- Early Decision (II) due January 1
- Regular Decision due January 5
NYU does not publish early acceptance rates, but applying Early Decision—a binding agreement— signals strong commitment to NYU. For many students, it may be advantageous to apply early. “The admit rate in Early Decision certainly looks very different,” Gleason says. “ If I had to guess, it’s likely in the 30% to 35% range; it does carry quite a bit of weight.”
Gleason also advises students to consider Early Decision 2, especially if they did not receive an acceptance during the first round of early applications. However, timing is key here. Applying to college early should not come at the expense of quality. Students should only consider applying early if:
- Their college application is ready by the November deadline
- They have NYU as a clear first-choice institution
- Have their financial situation sorted out and do not have to rely heavily on financial aid or scholarships to enrol
The bottom line: a polished Regular Decision application outperforms a rushed Early Decision.
Does your major matter to NYU?
Yes, majors matter in the NYU admissions process. NYU admits students by school, not just to the university. Each school has its own process, requirements, and acceptance rates. “I did read by school,” Gleason says, “and you were looking for specific things for each school. Be sure that you are aligned with what you’ve chosen to apply to. Sometimes students clearly applied to a certain school because it was less competitive, but they didn’t meet the profile of what we were looking for.”
Some of NYU’s schools, particularly Stern (Business), Tandon (Engineering), and the College of Arts and Sciences, have acceptance rates below 5%, while other schools tend to have a more favorable acceptance rate. Choosing which school to apply to will require an extra bit of care from students. Applying to a major strictly because it’s easier is not always the best strategy, especially if there is no interest demonstrated in your college application.
NYU may also be an option for even those students who may be undecided. In those cases, Gleason recommends Liberal Studies. “Liberal studies is great; you can go into engineering from liberal studies, you can go to business from liberal studies. They do not cap you, they do not cut you off.” This pathway is a legitimate option to allow students the flexibility before committing to a program.
